Op Ed, Vancouver Sun, July 21, 2008
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) issues are being driven into
the boardroom as never before. Yet boards of directors still largely
see social and environmental issues as operational matters rather

responsibilities.

The Convergence
of Corporate Governance and Corporate Social Responsibility - Thought
Leaders Study
Corporate governance reform efforts of the past decade have bumped
into decade-old efforts to mainstream social and environment responsibility
of corporations and a growing awareness that firms’ off balance
sheet environmental and social impacts can have tangible financial
consequences. This encounter has fueled a debate regarding the
degree and nature of convergence between corporate governance and
corporate social responsibility. The Canadian Co-operative Association,
interested in promoting good governance and social responsibility
practices to its member cooperatives, sponsored Coro Strandberg
to conduct an international thought-leaders study on this convergence
issue.
